Students with previous design training will work as an in-house design firm for clients from within the school as well as clients in the local community. They will also design the layout for the school newspaper. Advanced students will be expected to take initiative and work independently, as well as in teams, to meet deadlines and solve creative problems.
Creativity will be stressed. More advanced technical skills will be taught and critiques will be an integral part of the design process, helping students be articulate about their own work, and the work of others while developing a criteria for what makes good design. Advanced typographic considerations, visual hierarchy, and designing for a target audience will be emphasized.
Topics include the elements of art and style, design history, typography, page layout, photo manipulation, illustration, logo/identity design, packaging, identifying a target audience, questioning the ethics of advertising.
